About the Founder of Brave Butterfly

Tami Franklin grew up in Stillwater, Oklahoma where she attended Stillwater High School, class of 1990, and studied at Encore! Dance Studios under the mentoring of Linda Twedell. In 1994, she founded and operated Steppin' Out Dance Studio in Tuttle, Oklahoma where she taught dance for 14 years. She graduated from Northern Oklahoma College (Stillwater) in 2013 with an Associate's degree in Arts and Sciences and also participated in the humanitarian training "Atlantic Hope" owing to the mentoring of Wade Watkins. In May 2016 she graduated from Missouri State University with a BA in Anthropology with minors in Diversity Studies and Geography. During this time she studied for three weeks in Guatemala and Honduras gaining valuable experiences and insights. In 2017, The Brave Butterfly was incorporated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. March 2016 and 2017 she began the footprints of Brave Butterfly's first wing, the Find Your Wings program. Dance lessons were taught to K-12 students of Sonlight Academy in Port de Paix, Haiti. March of 2017, Tami felt blessed to join the nonprofit organization, Springfield Ballet, Inc., in the part-time position of Outreach Programs Coordinator and dance instructor. She maintained a Graduate Assistantship for 3 semesters with MSU's Center for Community Engagement. During this time she worked with the Vision Screening program, student service-learning, Public Affairs events, after-school programming, and much more. On December 15, 2017 she graduated from MSU with a Masters of Professional Studies individualized in Global Philanthropy. Her focus in 2018 can now be fully engaged with her association with Springfield Ballet, Inc. and furthering The Brave Butterfly towards its intended presence and purpose!

"The Brave Butterfly is my personal journey of love and empowerment which began to manifest over ten years ago. I knew Brave Butterfly's storybook was within me as I sketched on poster boards what she would look like and when one day, while substitute teaching for Tulsa Union schools, I envisioned The Brave Butterfly book sitting on top of the school library as I passed by. This gave me affirmation that it would be in my future. Brave Butterfly is my personal vision where I can share my inherent love for humanity, dancing, and education, alongside my personal passions for creating, teaching, and mentoring. I am so excited to share Brave Butterfly's journey with you!" ~ Tami
